The property at 1001 W. Mayfield is a 9.5-acre parcel that has previously not been developed. A developer has submitted a proposal for a 12-building,
64-unit townhome complex, which will require:
- Removing 800+ trees, including a cluster of irreplaceable post oaks
- Rerouting the property's natural watershed, potentially causing flooding and pollution issues
- Building on potentially historic land

The City of Arlington has committed to preserving the environment, including preserving the urban forest, maintaining natural habitats, preventing pollution (water, air, land), and preventing flooding caused by urban development, among other aspects.
The City's Unified Development Code (UDC), which is the standard by which policies are implemented, however, has not been updated to reflect the city's environmental protection policies. The existing tree ordinance fails to protect Arlington's dwindling urban canopy and its non-ornamental native trees. At risk are the city's signature post oaks, which are representative of its place in the Eastern Cross Timbers Ecoregion and which cannot be grown commercially.
