The City of Arlington has committed to preserving the environment, including preserving the urban forest, maintaining natural habitats, preventing pollution (water, air, land), and preventing flooding caused by urban development, among other aspects.
The City's Unified Development Code (UDC), which is the standard by which policies are implemented, however, has not been updated to reflect the city's environmental protection policies. The existing tree ordinance fails to protect Arlington's dwindling urban canopy and its non-ornamental native trees. At risk are the city's signature post oaks, which are representative of its place in the Eastern Cross Timbers Ecoregion and which cannot be grown commercially.
